8 Drugstore Sunscreens That Won’t Make Your Face Break Out This Summer

What’s worse than hitting the beach with goopy white stuff all over your face? Having to deal with zits from that goopy white stuff all over your face. But you shouldn’t have to choose between preventing acne or wrinkles when you should be outside having fun.

Thankfully, sunscreen formulas have come a long way since the gloppy, greasy formulas of the past, and brands are even catering to acne-prone skin now. “I recommend checking the label for products that are ‘non-comedogenic’ and ‘oil-free,'” says Jeannette Graf, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. “There are also different application forms, such as wipes and gels, that may be less oily.”

Before we get into the sunscreens and skin-saving formulas, there are a few important SPF rules to remember, according to Dr. Graf:
Sunscreen must be broad spectrum, meaning it filters out both UVA and UVB rays.
You must reapply every two hours (or 40-80 minutes if in water) during the summer months. A higher SPF number does not mean you can spend more time in the sun without reapplying.
SPF of 30 filters 97 percent of the sun’s rays. During the winter, SPF 15 to 30 is fine. During the summer, opt for SPF 30 to 50+.
Got it? Good. Now check out these 8 sunscreens that won’t clog pores, cause breakouts, or leave your face looking like a hot mess. Most are for face, but some can also be used on your body, because bacne has never been a good look.

Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Lotion SPF 50
You know that white-nose, lifeguard look? This is not it. Zinc (that white stuff) is one of the strongest physical sunblocks out there. Problem is: It’s chalky and doesn’t blend well in formulas. So Neutrogena created a naturally sourced, 100-percent zinc oxide technology that disappears on skin while still protecting against UVA and UVB rays. Free of fragrance, parabens, phthalates, dyes, and common irritants, it’s great for sensitive skin.
